Robert Nelson Stanfield (1832-1896) was a native of Sangamon County, Illinois, and came to Umatilla County, Oregon, in 1860 from California. He moved to Pendleton, Oregon, in 1883 and ran a warehouse and transport business. Later he bought a farm on Butter Creek. His first wife was Phoebe Atwood Stanfield, and his second wife was Hattie Townsend Stanfield. His son, also named Robert Nelson Stanfield (1877-1945), served as U.S. Senator from Oregon.
